Convert Tableau® calculated fields to DAX
Paste a calculated field from Tableau®. Get a Power BI DAX measure, and a plain note on anything that may behave differently after the move.
Add your Power BI model (optional)
Don't paste confidential formulas or field names. Inputs are logged to improve Daxlane.
Your DAX measure shows up here, with the checks it passed and what to review.
How it maps
Common calculated fields and their DAX equivalents
Many calculated fields follow a handful of patterns. Some convert one to one; others depend on the view or on how your Power BI model is built, so Daxlane flags them.
| Pattern | Example | DAX approach | Conversion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Row-level formula | [Sales] - [Cost] | SUMX over the table, or a calculated column. | Automatic |
| Conditional aggregate | SUM(IF [Region]='EMEA' THEN [Sales] END) | Column filter in CALCULATE with KEEPFILTERS, so the visual and slicers still apply. | Automatic |
| Distinct count | COUNTD([Customer]) | DISTINCTCOUNTNOBLANK, because COUNTD ignores nulls. | Automatic |
| Null handling | ZN(SUM([Sales])) | COALESCE | Automatic |
| INCLUDE | AVG({INCLUDE [Customer] : SUM([Sales])}) | Iterator such as AVERAGEX over VALUES of the added column. | Automatic |
| FIXED | {FIXED [Customer] : SUM([Sales])} | Iterator over the listed dimensions with ALLEXCEPT. Power BI slicers on those dimensions still apply, while Tableau dimension filters do not. | Review |
| EXCLUDE | {EXCLUDE [Region] : SUM([Sales])} | ALLSELECTED on the column, so the selection stays and the visual's split is removed. | Review |
| Running and window calculations | RUNNING_SUM(SUM([Sales])) | WINDOW over ALLSELECTED. Compute Using is not in the formula, so the sort and partition must be confirmed. | Review |
| Previous row | LOOKUP(SUM([Sales]), -1) | OFFSET with an explicit sort column. | Review |
| Parameters | [Parameters].[Top N] | SELECTEDVALUE on a disconnected table that you add to the model. | Review |
| Sets and groups | Top N sets, manual groups | A table or calculated column in the model. | Manual |
| Data blending | Primary and secondary sources | A model design decision: tables, relationships and filter direction. | Manual |
Before you migrate
Why a correct translation can still return a different number
The two engines apply filters in different ways. A converted formula is only as good as the model it runs on, so these are the things to check side by side.
- Filter order. Tableau® applies context filters, then FIXED, then dimension filters. DAX has no such order: everything is one filter context, and there is no context filter equivalent.
- View settings. Compute Using and the fields in the view shape table calculations, and none of that is in the formula. DAX needs the sort and partition written explicitly.
- Nulls and blanks. In Tableau®, a row with a null in the formula returns null. In DAX, BLANK counts as zero in arithmetic, so that row can still add to the total.
- Text comparison. DAX compares text without regard to case. In Tableau®, it depends on the data source.
- Testing. Compare a few key numbers in both tools before you retire the original workbook.
For migration teams
Migration pilot
Moving many workbooks at once? Send us the calculated fields from one representative workbook and we return:
- converted DAX measures for each formula,
- a review report that marks each one as automatic, review or manual,
- a short list of model decisions to make before the migration.
Early pilots are free during the beta.
We only need formula text. Please don't send .twbx or .hyper files, which can contain data, and remove confidential names or values first. We can sign an NDA.
Pilot request received. We'll reply within two working days.
FAQ
Questions
Is Daxlane affiliated with Tableau, Salesforce or Microsoft?
No. Daxlane is an independent product. Product names are used only to describe which formulas it can read and which language it writes.
Is the conversion exact?
Simple calculated fields usually map one to one. Where the two engines behave differently, such as FIXED expressions, filter order or table calculations, Daxlane flags it for review. Always compare the result with the original numbers.
Does it convert whole workbooks?
No. The preview converts one calculated field at a time. It does not read workbook files, and it does not rebuild dashboards or data sources.
What happens to what I paste?
Inputs are logged so we can improve the converter. Don't paste confidential formulas or field names. For pilots we work only with the formula text you choose to share.
